I proposed to my two associates that they buy me out in 5 years, may me off over time, and keep me on as an employee to preserve the client base and consult from afar. It appears likely that they will accept.

This is huge - an opportunity to live a peaceful life by 51 with my wife, cars and dogs in a beautiful place. We have our eye on Colorado, and my wife likes this house.

It won’t be there of course when we are ready to buy, but I am trying to put this future together for us. I am sure going to try and pull this off.

That will be great. Internal change of ownership is the best for the employees and the clients, even though it might be more challenging for you in terms of payout process when compared to getting bought out by a firm with deep pockets. Best wishes for a smooth process.

Will you start a practice there or take a different direction with your career? Or will you retire?

Good for you! Done right, all of you will benefit from that arrangement. Hope it works - we’re at the point where we are talking about our exit strategy too.

Think of all the niche 4WD Toyotas you could scoop up in Colorado!

This all sounds fantastic. The house too: radiant heat. Woodstove. Lots of wood everywhere. Garage. May need more garage. Beautiful! And it sounds like you’re going a good direction, on all fronts... cheers.

Sounds like a good plan. I have no regrets leaving California. It was a bit easier for us since we have very little family there and I was miserable with allergies the last 3 or 4 years we were there, I still have the same job I had there, I just get to do cool outdoor shit every single day.

This just makes me more depressed about SoCal house prices.

All I can say is congrats! You’ve done a great job with your life to be able to put your family in such a great situation. Enjoy it, I’m sure you’ve worked incredibly hard for it.

Colorado is a majestic place, but have you ever been?

It gets cold, then there’s the wind. Chicago is only called “The Windy City” because Denver preferred “Mile High” instead. Winter is longggg. That part of Colorado is milder than the northern half of the state, and it’s also far from everything. Could you handle being 2 hours away from a Costco? Colorado isn’t for everyone. I’d suggest visiting between late Jan to now for a couple weeks on year just to see how you like that town, and waking up to single digits. There were weeks that I would go get gas on my lunch break, because it was 12 degrees at noon. Had I stopped that morning or on my way home it would be -14 (that’s before factoring the windchill). My friend got 4 inches of snow in JUNE last year. She’s not even in the mountains

Don’t get me wrong, when the weather is just right, it’s a wonderful place. You earn those days though.

I am jealous I love Colorado. It is getting a bit pricey thanks to all the Californians and others that moved there for weed, but I see a lot of those people leaving now that it is legal back in CA. Maybe in 5 years it’ll be nice to live there. I always have my eye on there or Oregon, but CO would be first.
